A five-month-old baby died at the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) on Saturday, May 9, 2026, after sustaining severe injuries in a stray dog attack in Dubalgundi village, Humnabad taluk, Bidar district, Karnataka. The infant, daughter of Siddappa and Sudha, was attacked while sleeping in the verandah of their home in the early hours of the morning.
According to family members, the mother heard the baby cry and found a stray dog biting the infant repeatedly. She drove the animal away but the child had already suffered critical injuries to the head and face. The baby was rushed to BRIMS but succumbed to the injuries later that day, confirmed senior paediatrician Shanthala Koujalgi.
Residents of Dubalgundi village protested the incident, citing unchecked stray dog populations and repeated unheeded complaints to authorities. They demanded immediate action to control stray animals and compensation for the family.
Bidar district in-charge Minister Eshwar B. Khandre expressed condolences and directed the district administration to disburse compensation as per norms. He also instructed officials to identify aggressive stray dogs and implement control measures under existing regulations.
The district administration is expected to review animal control protocols, and health officials will assess compliance with anti-rabies and sterilisation programmes in the area.
