Noida Workers Await Salaries Amid Uncertainty Over Promised Wage Hike

The Uttar Pradesh government announced a hike in minimum wages for unskilled workers by as much as 21%, effective from April 1, following labor unrest in mid-April. However, workers at a Motherson Group facility in Noida, who were expected to receive their salaries on Thursday, said they neither received their payslips nor saw the revised wages credited to their accounts till evening.
The wage hike, which varies by location, includes a 15% raise for workers in municipalities and a 9% increase for those in other areas. Unskilled workers in Uttar Pradesh, who have been earning a minimum of ₹11,313 per month, will now receive ₹13,690 per month in Noida and Ghaziabad.
Workers at the Motherson Group facility expressed skepticism about receiving the revised wages, citing a lack of documentary evidence guaranteeing the promises made by the company. They also raised concerns about working conditions, including the lack of payslips and unclear overtime payment policies.
The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The State government has mandated that salaries must be paid by the 10th of every month, along with overtime wages calculated on an hourly basis at double rates.
The immediate next steps will depend on the company's response to the workers' concerns and the implementation of the wage hike. The workers will likely continue to press for the payment of their salaries and the fulfillment of the promises made by the company and the government.
