Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on May 11, 2026, stated it is appropriate for the Lieutenant Governor to hold telecom suspension powers during public safety events, as the L-G oversees security and law and order. He said such authority aligns with existing business rules and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act.
Abdullah clarified that orders to suspend mobile or internet services are issued by the Home Department, which falls under the Lieutenant Governor's jurisdiction. He emphasized that his government should not be relied upon to take responsibility for security-related decisions outside its purview.
The Chief Minister confirmed he would raise the issue of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood, along with governance matters, during his upcoming meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He noted that while statehood cannot be expected after a single meeting, it remains a key agenda item.
Abdullah also defended recent comments on liquor sales, stating that existing outlets cater only to those permitted by religious beliefs, and accused opposition parties of misrepresenting his statements. He said no new liquor shops have been opened under his administration.
On cabinet expansion, Abdullah said the government is functioning effectively and any changes will be made at an appropriate time in consultation with party leadership. The next assembly elections are scheduled in three-and-a-half years.
