Patagonia’s 2022 letter from founder Yvon Chouinard set the stage for a split ownership that felt more like a pledge than a transaction. In that letter, the company declared Earth its only shareholder, a phrase that hinted at a radical mission shift. The Holdfast Collective now owns 98 % of the non‑voting shares, while the Patagonia Purpose Trust holds the 2 % that carries all voting power, ensuring the brand’s values stay protected.
The Work in Progress Report, released on 12 November 2025, records that Patagonia has disbursed $180 million in excess‑profit dividends to the Holdfast Collective since the ownership change. Those payments come after the company reinvests in its own operations and sets aside reserves for emergencies. In June 2025, Holdfast used $2 million of those funds to help the Conservation Fund buy 8,000 acres of Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp, the largest black‑water wetland in the United States.
Beyond dividends, Patagonia’s 2025 fiscal year saw $14.7 million in grants and in‑kind support to 824 nonprofits through its 1 % for the Planet programme, and a cumulative $240 million in environmental grants since the company’s founding. The company also launched a platform that generated over a million actions—signatures, donations, event participation—supporting grantees worldwide.
The report, however, is not a celebration. It flags rising emissions, a lack of end‑of‑life solutions for products, and unresolved supply‑chain challenges. Ryan Gellert, Patagonia’s CEO, said the findings highlight the work still ahead. "We’re still learning how to balance profit with purpose," he told reporters.
For the residents of the Okefenokee, the $2 million grant means more than a headline. A local farmer, Maya Thomas, said the protection will keep her fields from mining encroachment. "It’s a lifeline for our community and the wildlife we depend on," she remarked.
Patagonia will release its next sustainability report in March 2026, where it is expected to detail future dividend allocations and progress on the environmental metrics raised in the current Work in Progress Report.
