Kitten Rescued from Mississippi Tornado Debris After Storm Chaser Hears Faint Meows

A kitten was rescued from the wreckage of a trailer park in Bogue Chitto, Mississippi, early Thursday after storm chaser Ashton Lemley heard its faint meows amid debris left by a tornado that struck hours earlier. The storm was one of at least three tornadoes to hit southern Mississippi, injuring a dozen people and leveling homes in the rural community.
Lemley located the animal trapped between wooden posts and under insulation, capturing the rescue on video as he pulled the wet and frightened kitten free. He held it briefly before transferring it to the commander of the United Cajun Navy, a volunteer disaster-response team, who dried and transported the animal to safety.
The kitten showed no signs of injury, according to Lemley, who has been tracking storms since 2010. He said he did not attempt to keep the cat due to allergies.
Officials are searching for the kitten's owner; if unclaimed, multiple people have expressed interest in adopting it, including suggestions to name it 'Tornado.' The United Cajun Navy continues search and assessment operations in the area.
