Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit Appointed IAF Chief, Aims to Accelerate Tejas Program

Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit took the helm of the Indian Air Force in 2026 after a 30‑year career that spanned frontline operations, combat leadership and experimental flight testing. He logged 3,300 flying hours across a spectrum of aircraft, from the HPT‑32 to the Jaguar, and commanded No. 9 Squadron during its Mirage‑2000 re‑equipping. His tenure included stints at the Flight Test Squadron in Bengaluru and participation in Operations Rakshak and Safed Sagar during the Kargil conflict.

Dixit’s résumé is a textbook match for the Aatmanirbharta push. He studied at the National Defence College and the Defence Staff Service College in Bangladesh, and has long been involved in India’s indigenous aviation projects. The LCA Tejas, the centerpiece of the country’s domestic fighter programme, will benefit from his test‑pilot background and strategic vision.

The IAF’s current challenge is to balance the urgent need for operational readiness with the longer‑term goal of fielding a fully indigenous fighter fleet. Dixit will oversee the ramp‑up of Tejas production, training of pilots and maintenance crews, and integration of domestic engines, avionics and weapons systems.

For the families of IAF personnel, Dixit’s appointment brings hope that the service will reduce reliance on foreign hardware. A former pilot from his No. 9 Squadron, now a senior instructor, said the new chief’s focus on local technology will give Indian pilots a cutting‑edge platform that they can maintain on home soil.

The next milestone will be the full operational deployment of the Tejas in the IAF’s frontline squadrons, slated for 2028. The Air Force will also begin procurement of the Tejas Mk‑IIB variant in the coming year, a move that will cement the program’s trajectory under Dixit’s stewardship.
