Chittoor Police have intensified monitoring of social media platforms after a violent clash between two groups during Hanuman Jayanti celebrations, which resulted in injuries to a police inspector and a constable. Superintendent of Police Tushar Dudi warned the public against circulating fake news, morphed images, or communal content online, stressing that such actions could disrupt public order.
The violence erupted on Friday when one group celebrating the month-long Hanuman Jayanti festivities displayed banners, prompting another group to pull them down. The confrontation escalated into physical violence, leading to police intervention and injuries. The district police attributed the rising tensions to the spread of inflammatory content on social media platforms.
Dudi stated that the police are actively tracking online activity and will take strict legal action against individuals creating or sharing content that threatens communal harmony. He urged social media group administrators to monitor posts and remove objectionable material promptly.
The public was advised not to believe or forward unverified messages and to rely only on official sources and credible news outlets. Residents were also encouraged to report instances of online rumour-mongering or hate speech to local police stations or through the emergency number Dial 100.
The district administration will continue its surveillance and public awareness campaign to prevent further escalation, with police reviewing social media content daily and stepping up coordination with platform moderators.
