DMK Passes Resolution Condemning Congress for Backing TVK in Tamil Nadu Govt Formation Stalemate
CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Thursday formally condemned the Indian National Congress for extending support to actor-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), following the party's resolution passed at an MLAs' meeting at DMK headquarters in Anna Arivalayam. The resolution stated the Congress secured five assembly seats only due to the DMK's cadre strength and accused the party of switching sides post-election after receiving pre-poll benefits, including a Rajya Sabha seat and 28 assembly constituencies from the DMK-led alliance.
The political landscape in Tamil Nadu remains deadlocked after the TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, 10 short of the majority mark, in the recently concluded assembly elections. The DMK, a long-time ally of the Congress, won only 59 seats. The Congress, with its five newly elected MLAs, has now forged a post-poll alliance with the TVK, bringing the latter's tally to 112, minus one seat to be vacated by Vijay who contested from two constituencies.
On Wednesday, TVK leader Vijay submitted a letter of support from the Congress to Governor R.N. Arlekar and staked a claim to form the government. Official sources indicate the Governor is yet to make a decision on the matter. The TVK is also actively seeking support from the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPIM), and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK)—all former allies of the DMK—to secure a clear majority.
VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan is scheduled to meet DMK president M.K. Stalin on Thursday amid these developments. Unconfirmed reports suggest the possibility of a DMK-AIADMK alliance, though no official statement has been released. The Governor's office has not announced a timeline for its decision on the government formation.
