CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby on Saturday dismissed as 'rumours' reports of a potential alliance between the DMK and AIADMK to form the government in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections, in which the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single-largest party but fell 11 seats short of a majority. Speaking in Madurai, Baby urged Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to invite TVK to form the government, citing established constitutional practice and Supreme Court precedents.
He accused the Governor of deviating from democratic convention, referencing the 1996 precedent when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was invited to form a government at the Centre despite lacking majority support. Baby alleged that the Union government was attempting to subvert the people's verdict by influencing political developments in Tamil Nadu, including efforts to install a BJP-backed administration.
The CPI(M) has formally written to the Governor, stating its readiness to extend legislative support to TVK. Baby confirmed the decision was made after consultations with the party's Politburo, State Executive, and State Committee, and that the DMK leadership had been informed.
He rejected claims of DMK supporting AIADMK to form a government, asserting that even if AIADMK attempted to stake a claim, it would require CPI(M) support—a scenario the party would not facilitate given AIADMK's NDA affiliation. Baby said he had no information on horse-trading allegations but attributed such speculation to the Governor's delay in action.
The Governor is expected to make a decision on government formation shortly, with political parties awaiting official summons for floor test arrangements.
