The Ambedkar Porata Samithi has urged the Andhra Pradesh government to conduct cancer screening tests in all mandals of Vizianagaram district, warning that patients often ignore symptoms due to lack of access to diagnostic facilities. The demand was made by Samithi president Soru Sambayya on Sunday during a health camp in Bobbili.
The Samithi, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital, Visakhapatnam, conducted a cancer screening camp in Bobbili to highlight gaps in rural healthcare access. Sambayya said the absence of a dedicated cancer hospital in Vizianagaram district forces rural patients to travel long distances for diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Swati, a senior physician at the camp, stressed that early detection and prompt treatment significantly improve cancer survival rates. In a separate initiative at the same location, Pushpagiri Eye Hospital conducted an eye camp and distributed spectacles to underprivileged patients.
The Samithi has asked the state health department to launch a district-wide cancer screening drive and establish mobile diagnostic units in remote mandals. The district administration is expected to review the proposal in upcoming health coordination meetings.
