Former Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Resigns, Election Commission Relieves Special Observers

TS Sivagnanam, the former Calcutta High Court Chief Justice, has resigned from the SIR Tribunal, which handles cases of voters whose names were deleted in the judicial adjudication process of the special intensive revision in West Bengal. Justice Sivagnanam cited personal reasons for his decision.
The Election Commission of India has relieved special poll observers Subrata Gupta and NK Mishra from their duties following the West Bengal Assembly elections. Both observers were appointed by the Commission for the recently concluded polls in the state.
The West Bengal Assembly elections were notable for peaceful polling and an unprecedented voting percentage. The Election Commission of India has acknowledged the role of three officers, including Gupta and Mishra, in achieving this outcome.
The Commission has also lifted the Model Code of Conduct for West Bengal, except for the Falta Assembly constituency, where re-polling will be conducted on May 21. The court will resume hearing on the matter after the re-polling results are declared on May 24.
