Telangana Records Highest Number of Human Trafficking Cases in India

Telangana recorded 423 human trafficking cases in 2024, the highest among all states and union territories in India, accounting for nearly 20% of the national total of 2,135 cases. The state's figure represents a 25.9% increase from 336 cases in 2023 and an 8.2% rise from 391 cases in 2022.
The majority of the victims in Telangana were adults, with 765 out of 814 being above 18 years of age, and women accounted for an overwhelming majority, with 792 out of 814 victims being female.
The dominant motive behind trafficking in Telangana was sexual exploitation for prostitution, linked to 770 victims, while forced labour was linked to 17 victims.
The state's charge-sheeting rate stood at 99%, higher than the national average of 90.8%, and its trafficking crime rate was 1.1 cases per lakh population, the highest in the country. The authorities are expected to take further action to address the issue, with the next steps likely to involve increased enforcement and support for victims.
