A man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly stealing a police vehicle parked inside the Kannur city cyber police station compound, according to officials. The arrested man, identified as 49-year-old Hamsath, a native of Thozhiyoor near Guruvayoor in Thrissur, allegedly trespassed on the compound around 12:30 a.m. and drove away with the SUV.
The police said Hamsath surveyed the premises before entering the vehicle and driving it to a petrol pump, where he refueled without paying. He then went to a nearby night eatery, where people grew suspicious and alerted the Kannur Town police.
A police team questioned Hamsath and took him into custody, and a case was registered against him for alleged theft of government property. The stolen vehicle was handed over to officials of the Kannur cyber police station.
The police have completed the initial investigation, and the case is pending further proceedings. The court is expected to hear the case in the coming days.
