Bharat Dynamics (BDL) inked a ₹1,543 crore deal to supply Varunastra heavyweight torpedoes to the Indian Navy. The contract, filed in the BSE exchange, covers 42 months of delivery and excludes taxes. BDL shares traded at ₹1,128.40 on the NSE around 3 pm, slipping 0.05% amid the announcement.
The Varunastra torpedo is an indigenously designed, ship‑launched anti‑submarine weapon, boasting long‑range manoeuvring capabilities that promise to bolster the Navy’s underwater deterrence. BDL clarified the order is not a related‑party transaction, and that it was awarded by a domestic entity without promoter influence. Earlier this year, BDL also secured an ₹810.79 crore contract for Satellite Smart Anti‑Airfield Weapons (SAT‑SAAW) for the Air Force, underscoring a trend of domestic firms winning sizeable defence contracts. Analysts note that such orders will likely lift BDL’s revenue base, though the company’s shares have slid 23.6% year‑to‑date.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru‑based NewSpace India Ltd. signed a ₹2,563‑crore contract to develop the GSAT‑7C communication satellite for the Indian Air Force. The satellite, designed and manufactured indigenously, aims to provide secure, reliable communication links for air assets. Although NewSpace India is not listed on the NSE, the deal signals a growing domestic satellite manufacturing push that could benefit the broader Indian aerospace sector.
Defence procurement has surged in the last quarter, with the Ministry of Defence signing ₹4,106 crore in contracts on October 15, a 12.5% increase over the same period last year. BDL’s shares have traded flat and slipped marginally on the day, reflecting investors’ focus on the timing of earnings recognition. BDL’s filing indicates delivery within 42 months, which may accelerate revenue recognition in the next fiscal quarter. Investors will look to BDL’s upcoming earnings release on November 20 for guidance on margin impact and future order pipeline.
