Lightizer, who joined the fledgling Compugraphic Corp. at 18, spent her career testing typefaces as they moved from graphite sketches to downloadable families.
She witnessed Monotype’s ownership shifts, including the 2019 sale to HGGC for $825 million, and the rise of font licensing as a global industry.
To honor her legacy, colleagues secretly designed a typeface called "Lightizer", keeping it a surprise until the launch.
The font debuted on Monotype’s site alongside classics such as Helvetica and Times New Roman, and will be available for licensing in the next quarter.
Lightizer’s departure marks the end of an era for a woman whose name will now appear on every screen that displays Monotype’s fonts.
