Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at a ceremony held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, marking the first time since 1967 that a leader outside the DMK and AIADMK alliances has assumed office. The oath was administered by Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar, who on Saturday appointed Vijay to the post following his party's win of 118 seats and majority support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML.
Security was heightened at the stadium as dignitaries, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, attended the event. Vijay's parents, filmmaker S. A. Chandrasekhar and Sobha Chandrasekhar, expressed pride ahead of the ceremony, with the latter calling it an emotional moment as it coincided with Mother's Day. The new Chief Minister must prove his majority in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by May 13.
Actor Trisha Krishnan arrived at the venue in a seafoam-green saree, drawing significant media coverage. She briefly responded to reporters with, "Thank you, looking forward," before entering the stadium. Her presence reignited public interest in her long-standing professional association with Vijay, though no official statements were made regarding their personal relationship.
TVK's rise to power follows a decisive performance in the state assembly elections, capitalizing on widespread voter demand for political change. With this victory, Vijay transitions from a leading film career to the chief executive role, facing immediate challenges of governance and coalition management.
The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
