NCP leader Rupali Chakankar appeared before a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Nashik on May 10, 2026, to record her statement in connection with her alleged association with self-styled godman Ashok Kharat, who is in judicial custody over rape, sexual exploitation, and financial fraud charges. Chakankar, formerly the chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission and chief of the NCP women’s wing, resigned following the emergence of her links to Kharat.
The SIT, constituted by the Maharashtra government to probe 12 cases against Kharat across Nashik and Ahilyanagar districts, is examining his network of alleged crimes, including land grabbing, cheating through black magic, and sexual assault. Investigators are expected to question Chakankar about the nature of her relationship with Kharat and whether her sister’s bank account was used by the accused for financial transactions.
Chakankar told reporters she would respond to all queries and cooperate with the investigation, asserting it was her duty as a public figure. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Nana Patole alleged that four state ministers had connections with Kharat and claimed the godman’s life was at risk in prison, demanding their removal in a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
BJP leader and Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule challenged Patole to name the ministers instead of making vague allegations and stated that Kharat was safe in custody. Photographs of Kharat with multiple political figures have surfaced since his arrest on March 18, intensifying scrutiny of his influence.
The SIT is expected to file a progress report in the coming days, and further questioning of Chakankar may be conducted if required. The court will hear the next status update in the Kharat case on May 17, 2026.
