Iltija Mufti's X account was blocked in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, May 11, 2026, according to local authorities and social media records. Mufti is the daughter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
On April 29, Mufti shared a video of the late Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani discussing the importance of Urdu for Kashmir, India, Pakistan and Muslims. She stated she did not agree with his ideology but found the message on language relevant amid the J&K administration's decision to remove Urdu from revenue services. The post garnered around 157,000 views and 168 re-shares.
The account block comes days after Jammu and Kashmir police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals for allegedly promoting separatist ideology and spreading false information to incite unlawful activities against India's sovereignty and integrity. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether Mufti is named in the FIR.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the J&K administration have not issued public statements regarding the specific action against Mufti's account. Social media blocks in the region are typically issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, which allows for content removal in the interest of national security and public order.
The government has not announced any further actions, and the status of Mufti's account remains under review. The court monitoring internet restrictions in J&K is scheduled to convene on May 18, 2026, to review pending digital rights cases.
