Indian Railways to Introduce Upgraded Reservation System in August
Indian Railways is preparing to shift all train reservations to a new and upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS) from August, according to a statement from the Ministry of Railways. The move is aimed at improving ticket booking services and reducing technical problems faced by passengers, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw instructing officials to ensure a smooth transition.
The current reservation system was first introduced in 1986 and has been upgraded several times to handle the growing number of passengers booking train tickets. Online railway ticket booking started in 2002, and today nearly 88% of all railway ticket bookings happen through online platforms.
The new reservation system is part of the railways' efforts to enhance passenger experience, with the introduction of the RailOne super app in 2025 being a significant step in this direction. The app uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict whether a waitlisted train ticket is likely to get confirmed, with an accuracy rate of 94%.
The RailOne app has been widely appreciated, with 9.29 lakh tickets booked through it every day, including 7.2 lakh unreserved tickets and 2.09 lakh reserved tickets. The app has been downloaded 3.16 crore times from the Google Play Store and 33.17 lakh times on Apple devices.
The court will not be involved in this case, but the Railway Ministry will continue to monitor the transition to the new reservation system and address any issues that may arise. The ministry will also conduct regular reviews to ensure that the new system is functioning smoothly and efficiently.
