The Andhra Pradesh government aims to provide assured water to over 200,000 acres by completing major irrigation projects in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts by 2027, with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directing district collectors to expedite work during a conference in Amaravati. Naidu tasked Vizianagaram Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy and Srikakulam Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar with ensuring timely implementation of the projects.
The government plans to link the Nagavali and Champavati rivers by 2027, a move expected to improve drinking water supply to Vizianagaram city and enhance utilisation of Nagavali river waters. Officials also intend to complete the Neradi project for better use of Vamsadhara river waters, while constructing a distributory network to deliver water from the Thotapalli reservoir to tail-end areas in Vizianagaram and Parvatipuram-Manyam districts.
Currently, water from the Thotapalli reservoir is underutilised due to inadequate canal infrastructure in several mandals. Irrigation authorities aim to complete the new distributory network by June 2026 to ensure farmers benefit during the upcoming Kharif season.
MARKFED Director and A.P. Panchayatraj Chamber Vice President Anepu Ramakrishna welcomed the irrigation calendar release, stating that project completions and canal development would significantly benefit farmers in the region. The government will monitor progress ahead of the next agricultural cycle.
