Himanta Biswa Sarma has been elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party in Assam, clearing the way for his return as Chief Minister. The decision follows the BJP's victory in the recent Assam legislative assembly elections.
Sarma will be sworn in on May 12 in Guwahati, in a ceremony that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend as chief guest. Senior leaders from alliance parties are also expected to attend the event.
The swearing-in will formalize Sarma's second term as Chief Minister, following his leadership during the previous five-year term. The BJP retained power in Assam with a decisive majority, winning 47 of 126 seats, while the NDA as a whole secured a governing majority.
The government is expected to convene its first cabinet meeting within the week following the oath-taking. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
