Superstar Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has secured majority support to form the first coalition government in Tamil Nadu with the unconditional support of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), sources told NDTV. The VCK's support adds two crucial seats to the TVK's tally, bringing its strength to 118 MLA-elects, meeting the required number to form government in the state.
The TVK already had the support of 116 MLA-elects, including five from the Congress and four from the Left parties. While the Left parties had extended unconditional support, the Congress' backing came with conditions, including expectations of two ministries.
The development comes after Vijay made multiple rounds of the Lok Bhavan but failed to convince Governor RV Arlekar that he had the majority, due to confusion over the VCK's support.
The TVK remains the big story, having emerged the largest single party with 108 seats in the recent polls, ending the Dravidian giants DMK and AIADMK's 62-year-old stranglehold on the government. The Governor will now be expected to invite Vijay to form the government, with the oath ceremony likely to take place soon.
