West Bengal Police Register 200 FIRs, Arrest 433 in Post-Poll Violence Crackdown

West Bengal police have registered 200 FIRs and made 433 arrests in connection with post-poll violence following the declaration of Assembly election results on May 4, Director General of Police Siddh Nath Gupta said Wednesday. An additional 1,100 individuals have been placed under preventive detention across the state.
The DGP said 500 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) remain deployed in the state under Election Commission of India (ECI) orders issued Tuesday, mandating zero tolerance toward violence. The forces will continue their deployment until further instructions from the ECI.
Gupta confirmed that additional security cover for outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has been withdrawn, with personnel reassigned to law and order duties. He stated both leaders continue to receive protocol-mandated security.
The DGP urged the public not to resort to vigilante action, emphasizing that police would register suo motu cases where complaints are not filed. The Election Commission continues to monitor the situation closely.
