Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced Suvendu Adhikari as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Friday, after the party's victory in the state assembly elections ended the Trinamool Congress's 15-year rule. Shah addressed a meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs and senior party leaders, using the occasion to target outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with a reference to her past remarks.
Shah stated that Adhikari's victory over Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency in 2021 marked a significant defeat for the outgoing Chief Minister.
The new government's priorities will include national security, with Shah emphasizing that infiltration and cattle smuggling would become impossible in West Bengal under BJP rule.
Shah added that the party would work to identify and remove every infiltrator from the country, describing the victory as a significant development for national security. The BJP's success in West Bengal marks the first time the party has secured power in the state, bringing an end to the Trinamool Congress's uninterrupted rule since 2011.
The court is expected to resume hearing on the related matters, while the new government will begin its term with a focus on implementing its priorities, including national security measures.
