Joseph Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, ending six decades of political dominance by the DMK and AIADMK. The TVK founder secured a majority in the 234-member Assembly with backing from four VCK MLAs, the Indian Union Muslim League, and the Congress party's five legislators, following days of negotiations after the 2026 Assembly elections.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, actor Trisha, and Vijay's parents, S.A. Chandrasekhar and Shobha. The new Cabinet includes a mix of young leaders and experienced politicians, with key TVK figures inducted into the ministry. Vijay, a 51-year-old former actor, was formally appointed by the Governor on May 9 after the coalition reached the 118-seat threshold.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated Vijay, stating that the new government reaffirms the values of self-respect, social justice, and rational thought rooted in Tamil Nadu's political history. He credited the people's trust in the TVK, particularly among youth, and expressed confidence that these ideals would guide governance. The Congress had formally pledged its support immediately after the election results.
In his inaugural address, Vijay said he came from no political dynasty and acknowledged the public's trust, vowing not to make false promises. He emphasized inclusive governance and service to all sections of society. The administration is expected to release its policy agenda and cabinet responsibilities in the coming week.
