Punjab Police Launches Youth Program to Curb Gang Influence
Punjab Police has intensified its 'Yuva Saanjh Programme' to redirect vulnerable youth away from gangs and extremism. Since January, the initiative has identified 2,358 individuals via social media analysis, with 1,519 profiles created on state software. Officials state this preventive approach complements Operation 'Gangstran Te Vaar', which targets organized crime networks.
The program uses psychological profiling, counseling, and family engagement to address root causes. So far, 1,836 individuals have received counseling, while 1,490 attended sensitization sessions. District-level committees, led by SP/DCPO officers, coordinate efforts with NGOs and psychologists to ensure community involvement.
Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav emphasized the dual strategy: 'Decisive enforcement through 'Gangstran Te Vaar' and sustained preventive engagement through 'Yuva Saanjh'.' The approach balances firm action with empathetic intervention, aiming to dismantle criminal networks while protecting youth.
Field implementation involves 11 planned interactions over eight months, focusing on skill development and employment links. SSP Fazilka highlighted the program's uniqueness: 'This is the first state-led initiative of its scale, turning youth toward lawful pathways.' Rehabilitation includes financial aid and psychological support via district administrations.
The Punjab Police claims reduced crime rates and prevention of youth involvement in criminal activities. Officials stress early identification as key, with plans to expand outreach to counter online extremism and gangster culture.
