A suspected hantavirus case has been identified on Tristan da Cunha following a visit by the cruise ship MV Hondius in mid-April 2026, the UK Health Security Agency confirmed. The passenger, believed to be still on the island, had disembarked after the ship's stopover on April 14, three days after a fellow passenger died from the Andes strain of hantavirus.
The MV Hondius visited the island as part of its final seasonal stop, with locals boarding the vessel and passengers coming ashore, according to a local Tristan blog. With no airstrip and only around 10 annual ship arrivals from Cape Town, the island's isolation makes it highly vulnerable to imported diseases. The island's administrator, Philip Kendall, stated the infections on the ship are 'of serious concern to the island,' given its population of just over 200 and reliance on infrequent maritime supply routes.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has activated its Emergency Operations Center at Level 3, the lowest emergency tier, to monitor individuals who disembarked from the MV Hondius in several states, including Texas, Arizona, Georgia, California, and Virginia. The Andes virus strain, confirmed by the World Health Organization, is unusual in that it can spread between humans through prolonged close contact, increasing transmission risks beyond typical rodent-borne cases.
UK health officials are coordinating with Tristan da Cunha authorities to assess the passenger's condition and implement containment measures. The island's medical facilities are limited, and evacuation would require days by sea.
The CDC will continue monitoring exposed individuals over the coming weeks, while the UK Health Security Agency is expected to release guidance for remote territories within days.
