The Thrissur Rural police have arrested Cyril, 36, of Potta, for allegedly attempting to murder Deenas Davis, 37, a native of Marathakkara, by attacking him with a hammer near a gym in Thrikkur village on Saturday. The attack took place around 7:30 p.m. and the victim suffered severe head injuries, undergoing emergency surgery at a private hospital in Thrissur.
The police said Cyril had reached the area nearly two hours earlier, waiting outside the gym wearing a helmet, and struck the victim from behind with a hammer as he stepped out after his workout. Cyril allegedly hit the victim twice more on the head in an attempt to kill him before fleeing the scene on a bicycle.
A special investigation team led by District Police Chief Krishna Kumar launched an intensive probe, deploying around 25 officers across the area, and identified and tracked down the suspect within a day using surveillance and scientific investigation. During interrogation, Cyril reportedly confessed that he was in a relationship with the victim's wife and planned to eliminate Deenas to live with her.
The police said the crime was premeditated and driven by the accused's relationship with the victim's wife, and that he had purchased the hammer from Chalakudy and even carried petrol, allegedly intending to set the victim on fire after the attack. The court will likely hear the case in the coming days, with the police set to file a chargesheet against the accused.
