Srikakulam Intensifies School Admissions Drive Amid Competition from Private Schools

The Srikakulam district administration has intensified efforts to increase enrollment in government schools through the 'Badi Pilustondi' (Calling the School) campaign, which will run until the second week of June 2026. District Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar on May 8, 2026, directed the District Education Officer A. Ravi Babu and other officials to deploy teachers in outreach activities to inform parents about academic standards, facilities, and Class X results in government schools. The move comes amid growing competition from corporate-run schools offering transportation in semi-urban areas, which officials fear could reduce public school enrollment.
Teachers and education officials have begun conducting rallies and door-to-door campaigns in villages, including Gudem, to promote government schools. The administration is highlighting free provisions such as textbooks, uniforms, bags, belts, and midday meals to attract students. District Education Officer Ravi Babu stated that the government aims for full admissions in public schools despite increasing private sector presence.
The Collector is scheduled to hold a review meeting with mandal educational officers, headmasters, and school committee members to assess the campaign's progress and reinforce enrollment strategies. Teachers' associations have raised concerns about conducting the drive during peak summer, citing health risks. The administration will continue monitoring participation and enrollment trends ahead of the new academic year.
