A Frontier Airlines Airbus A321 struck and killed a pedestrian who had illegally entered the runway during takeoff at Denver International Airport on Friday night, airport authorities confirmed. The collision, which occurred on runway 17L just after 11:19 p.m., caused a brief engine fire and forced the crew to abort takeoff and evacuate 231 people onboard.
The aircraft, Flight 4345 bound for Los Angeles, was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members. Audio from air traffic control shows the pilot reporting, 'We just hit somebody, we have an engine fire,' before declaring an evacuation due to smoke in the cabin. First responders arrived promptly, and the fire was extinguished by the Denver Fire Department.
The pedestrian, who is not believed to be an airport employee and remains unidentified, was partially consumed by one of the plane's engines, according to an official cited by ABC News. The airport confirmed the perimeter fence was intact, suggesting the individual deliberately bypassed security. The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified, and runway 17L will remain closed as the investigation continues.
