The Omani co‑pilot, whose name has not been released, was seized by Saudi authorities after the emergency landing of flydubai flight FZ1073 at Tabuk. Israeli investigators are scheduled to question him in the UAE on Thursday, as part of the ongoing probe.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, with 174 passengers—most of them Israeli nationals—on board. Captain Smit Machchhar was stabbed inside the cockpit, but managed to pry the door open, allowing crew and passengers to subdue the attacker. Flight‑tracker data shows the aircraft lost 16,625 feet in 30 seconds before the reserve pilot crew landed safely.
UAE state media announced that the investigation will determine whether the incident was linked to terrorism or involved prior planning or direction. Emirati officials said the probe will examine the suspect's motives, background, and any external instruction.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the co‑pilot had undergone “Islamist radical indoctrination” and was suicidal. In a video statement, he warned that whoever was involved would pay a “heavy price.” The Israeli government confirmed that its investigators will collaborate with Emirati authorities.
Commercial flights between the UAE and Israel have been suspended; repatriation flights are being arranged for stranded passengers. The probe’s preliminary findings are expected by Friday, after which the investigation will determine any further legal or diplomatic actions.
