India’s T20I campaign against New Zealand is already on a winning streak, with the team holding a 3‑0 advantage and eyeing a clean sweep.
Tilak Varma, freshly shifted from the No. 3 spot to the middle order, says the change has sharpened his attack. “I think about hitting a boundary off the very first ball if it’s there,” he told reporters before the fourth match, adding that he now focuses on taking the game deep and timing his shots for singles and doubles before going for bigger ones.
The real turning point came in the second T20I at Hagley Oval, where Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy forged a partnership that rescued India from a tense chase. Varma’s calm knock kept the scoreboard ticking, while Reddy’s steady partnership ensured the required run rate stayed within reach.
When the pressure mounts, Varma reminds himself that the bowler carries the weight. “In the end overs, the bowler is under far more pressure than I am,” he said, a mantra he says keeps him focused on the larger picture.
With the series already sealed, the squad is not taking it easy. Coach Gautam Gambhir and Varma alike emphasize that a 5‑0 sweep will set a high standard for the upcoming ODI and Test legs of the tour. “We’re looking to give the crowd a great finish,” Varma said, eyes on the next four games.
The next fixture is the final T20I, where India will aim to close out the series and cement their dominance on New Zealand soil.
