SEBI has rolled out Project Jagrook to curb misinformation, yet only 9.5% of Indian households are active in the securities market. The launch, held at Panjab University, signals a push to turn awareness into action.
Seventy‑two percent of respondents said they had heard of at least one market product, but just 36% claimed moderate or high knowledge. Urban households show a 15% participation rate, while rural penetration lags at 6%.
Demat accounts now total 23.8 crore, with 15 crore unique investors. Market capitalisation has leapt from ₹95 lakh crore in FY16 to ₹472 lakh crore, while FPI assets rose from ₹22 lakh crore to ₹78 lakh crore. Mutual fund AUM grew from ₹12 lakh crore to ₹87 lakh crore over the same decade.
"Our securities market is more democratic and accessible than ever, but access alone is not enough," said SEBI Chair Tuhin Kanta Pandey. He urged investors to base decisions on understanding rather than hype.
Project Jagrook will run through March 2027, using television, print, radio, cinema, OTT services and WhatsApp in English, Hindi and 11 regional languages. The initiative partners with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to extend financial literacy to the last mile and to universities, aiming to lift participation and strengthen market depth.
