Mohammed Aslam, 18, died by suicide on 6 October after a brief stint in a juvenile detention centre in Thrissur. He had been arrested on a blackmail charge tied to a romantic relationship, held for four days before bail, then released.
His father, Noushad Aslam, alleged that Kodungallur police fabricated evidence, subjected him to physical and mental harassment, and dragged him to suicide. The police claim no evidence of torture has surfaced.
The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, in a statement on Tuesday, filed a suo‑motu case and called for an inquiry into the police's conduct. It also demanded an independent investigation into the alleged abuse.
Investigators are now probing the brothers' phones for further abuse, looking for photographs and details of other girls. Police maintain the brothers were merely accused, but no corroborating evidence of torture has emerged.
The case is slated for a hearing before the commission next month, with the family demanding swift justice and a full report on the police's actions.
