On Sept 6, a Punjabi man was fatally stabbed in Mississauga’s Dundas Street East, near a shelter, with a knife wound severing major blood vessels and leaving him brain‑dead.
Jaspreet Kaur says her brother, Jagjit Singh Sandhu, stepped in when another Punjabi man was hurled racist remarks by a woman's boyfriend, who told him to "return to his country." Sandhu allegedly helped the victim escape, sparking a brawl.
During the altercation, a woman approached from behind and stabbed Sandhu on the right side of his neck. He was rushed to hospital and declared brain‑dead.
Peel Regional Police responded at 5:30 pm, initially arresting a male participant in the scuffle but releasing him after evidence ruled him innocent. They later identified 42‑year‑old Lorena Sanchez of Mississauga, who fled the scene, and arrested her on Sept 7 on attempted‑murder charges.
Kaur alleges police waited three days before contacting the family and ignored repeated calls. She also says media coverage fell short, stirring fear among Indian and Punjabi youth in Canada.
Sanchez will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton for a bail hearing, while investigators continue to probe the incident.
