Mizoram police have arrested two individuals in connection with a forgery racket that used fake court orders to secure the release of 17 under-trial prisoners from Lunglei district jail. Among the released were suspects booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, the state police said in a statement on May 9, 2026.
The investigation began on April 27, 2026, after two prisoners who had already been released using forged documents appeared before the Additional District and Sessions Judge in Lunglei, claiming they were out on ₹50,000 bond orders issued by the district court and Gauhati High Court. Their appearance raised suspicion, leading to an FIR being filed. Police found that the documents were fabricated and traced the operation to 15 individuals.
Jeremiah Lalthanglua, 25, from Aizawl, and C. Lalrinthluaii, 31, a private ambulance driver linked to the jail, were arrested as key operatives. Jeremiah, whose wife was detained in the same jail, allegedly coordinated with a lawyer to produce forged release orders using computers inside the jail and a Lunglei printing shop. Jail authorities accepted the documents as authentic and released the inmates.
Lunglei police have rearrested 11 of the 17 released prisoners. One is confirmed dead, and the search for the remaining five is ongoing. The police investigation continues, with authorities reviewing internal jail protocols and document verification procedures.
The court is expected to take up the case for preliminary hearing on May 14, while the state home department has ordered an administrative probe into the security lapse at Lunglei jail.
