Adani Airport Holdings Ltd announced on Saturday that it will commence a phased redevelopment of the North Section of Terminal 1B at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in January 2027, a move that will temporarily de‑operate about 5 million passenger slots annually.
The 60‑year‑old structure has been flagged for structural weaknesses for years, and a fire incident in April underscored the urgency of the upgrade. Bansal said safety must remain paramount, warning that any further delay could jeopardise millions of travellers.
To mitigate disruptions, airlines have been offered a shift to Navi Mumbai International Airport, which offers a 100 percent discount on landing fees for new international flights and cash vouchers to offset the User Development Fee differential.
The redevelopment plan has been under discussion with airlines since 2020 and presented to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) before being incorporated into the approved tariff framework, according to Bansal.
Construction is expected to lift Terminal 1's capacity by 33 percent to 20 million passengers per annum, and the first phase of work is scheduled to begin in early January 2027.
