The incident unfolded outside the office of BJP MLA Ritu Baran Sarmah in Sonitpur, Assam, when a truck driver, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, collided with a parked vehicle belonging to a party worker. The driver, moving around the scene, drew a dagger and lunged at Sarmah and her aides. Local bystanders tried to intervene, but the driver persisted, leading to a brief but violent confrontation. Three injuries, no fatalities reported.
During the skirmish, two party workers and a Home Guard suffered injuries, while Sarmah herself escaped unhurt. The driver was subdued by the crowd and immediately handed over to the police. Police officers on the scene arrested him and secured the area.
Witnesses say the driver had earlier rammed the parked vehicle before attempting to calm the situation, only to lose control after being intoxicated. A local resident, who was watching the demonstration, described the chaos as "unthinkable".
The case has been lodged under the Indian Penal Code for attempted murder and possession of a weapon. The next step will be a court hearing scheduled for the following week, where the driver will face charges.
