Congress Deadlock Over Kerala CM Pick as Venugopal, Satheesan Rivalry Intensifies

The Congress party has yet to name a Chief Minister for Kerala almost a week after the assembly election results, as a leadership contest intensifies between KC Venugopal and VD Satheesan. While Venugopal, a party general secretary and MP from Alappuzha, has secured majority support from Congress MLAs and is favored by senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Satheesan, the current Congress Legislative Party leader, commands strong grassroots and ally backing.
Internal party observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik have submitted reports indicating MLA preference for Venugopal, but Satheesan's public rallies have drawn reprimand from central leaders, who ordered him to halt demonstrations. The 102-seat UDF alliance won the election, with the Congress holding 63 seats and the IUML 22, making IUML's stance critical — the ally insists Satheesan, who led the campaign on the ground, deserves the post.
Appointing Venugopal would require two by-elections — one for the Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat and another for the assembly seat he would need to contest. The central leadership has called Kerala leaders to Delhi for consultations, with Sonia Gandhi, AK Antony, and UDF allies expected to participate in the decision. Rahul Gandhi now faces pressure to resolve the impasse without alienating key voter blocs, particularly in Wayanad, where Muslim voters form a majority.
The Congress High Command has not set a deadline for the decision, citing the need for consensus. The Kerala Legislative Assembly term runs until May 23, allowing time for deliberations. The party is expected to reconvene top leadership meetings in the coming days to finalize the Chief Ministerial nominee.
