Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is set to be sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, with a nine-member cabinet approved by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling short of the 118 majority mark, but secured support from the VCK, IUML, Congress, CPI and CPI(M), giving it a combined strength of 121.
The ministers inducted are N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, Dr. K.G. Arunraj, K.A. Sengottaiyan, P. Venkataramanan, R. Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, Dr. T.K. Prabhu and Selvi S. Keerthana, according to an official release from Lok Bhavan. Vijay, a 51-year-old former film actor, won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East and is expected to resign from one seat, reducing TVK's tally to 107.
The support of four MLAs from VCK and IUML, each contributing two MLAs, along with five Congress and four left-party legislators, pushed the alliance past the majority threshold. Vijay held multiple rounds of talks with alliance partners and met the Governor four times in four days to finalize government formation.
TVK supporters celebrated the development with firecrackers and gatherings at party offices across the state. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on Sunday, marking the beginning of the first non-Dravidian majoritarian government in Tamil Nadu since 1957.
