C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, marking a historic shift in the state's politics after nearly six decades of alternating rule by the DMK and AIADMK. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay at a grand ceremony in Chennai, where nine ministers were also sworn in alongside him.
In his first speech as Chief Minister, Vijay said a new era of real, secular, and social justice had begun, thanking the people of Tamil Nadu for giving him the responsibility and requesting time to deliver on his promises.
Vijay also spoke about the challenges he faced during his political journey and promised a transparent government, acknowledging the state's debt burden of over Rs 10 lakh crore.
The TVK-led alliance, which Vijay represents, secured the support of 120 MLAs in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark required to form the government.
The immediate outlook is for Vijay's government to address the state's debt burden and implement its promised policies, with the Chief Minister expected to announce his cabinet's portfolios and key initiatives in the coming days.
