Uttar Pradesh has integrated solar energy with rural water supply infrastructure under the Jal Jeevan Mission, deploying 33,157 solar-based water supply schemes across 67,013 villages to ensure sustainable and uninterrupted access to clean drinking water for nearly 13.3 crore people. The project, led by the State Water and Sanitation Mission, has eliminated dependency on the national grid for power, saving approximately 900 MW of electricity annually. This marks a major step in strengthening rural water security and energy efficiency in India's most populous state.
The solar-powered pumping systems, designed for a 30-year operational life, required a capital investment of ₹7,812 crore. Over their lifespan, they are projected to save ₹28,112 crore in power costs compared to conventional grid-based systems, with potential savings rising to ₹37,395 crore if annual power tariffs increase by 2%. Raj Shekhar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Rural), said the model avoids ₹2,487 crore in one-time grid connection costs and ₹1,115 crore in annual electricity expenses, positioning it as a financially viable and scalable solution.
The initiative has reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 1.3 million metric tonnes of CO₂ annually—equivalent to generating 1.3 million carbon credits per year. Monetization of these credits, at a conservative rate of USD 2 each, could yield USD 78 million (₹624 crore) over 30 years. The Carbon Market Association of India is assisting in technical assessment. The project, which minimizes land use and avoids multiple NOCs by co-locating solar plants with water facilities, received the Prime Minister’s Excellence Award in Administration last year.
State officials say the model is being studied by other states for replication. The Jal Jeevan Mission and Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam will continue expanding solar integration in remaining rural water supply schemes, with regular monitoring of power savings and carbon reduction metrics.
