Suvendu Adhikari Appointed West Bengal Chief Minister After BJP's Electoral Victory
Suvendu Adhikari has been appointed Chief Minister of West Bengal, following the BJP's sweeping victory in the 2026 state assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision during the party's legislative party meeting on Friday, confirming Adhikari's leadership of the new government.
The BJP won 207 of the 294 assembly seats, securing a clear majority and ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress. The TMC, led by outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was reduced to 80 seats, while Adhikari defeated Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency by over 15,000 votes.
Adhikari, a former TMC leader who joined the BJP ahead of the elections, is expected to take oath as Chief Minister in the coming days. The Election Commission officially declared the results on May 4, marking a significant shift in West Bengal's political landscape.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the state capital, Kolkata, with central BJP leadership expected to attend. The new assembly session will convene within two weeks to establish the council of ministers.
