Tamil Nadu Government Formation Crisis Deepens
Tamil Nadu is in the thick of a government formation crisis, with TVK chief Vijay meeting the governor for the second time in twenty-four hours on Thursday morning, but walking out without a clear path to the chief minister's chair. The governor's official statement emphasized that the requisite majority support in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has not been established, with Vijay's rivals AIADMK and DMK moving fast to ensure he does not get the numbers.
The AIADMK has shifted over 40 MLAs to a resort in Puducherry, in a bid to prevent last-minute poaching operations, while the DMK has authorized its president MK Stalin to take emergency decisions.
TVK suspects the AIADMK and DMK are working in coordination to block its government formation and has decided to move court, with all 108 TVK MLAs prepared to resign en masse if either party attempts to stake a claim to form the government.
The DMK has passed a sharp resolution against Congress, accusing it of betraying a long-standing alliance partner, while Vijay plans to challenge the governor's refusal to recognize his majority claim in court. The next twenty-four hours will determine whether Vijay can build a majority, with the governor waiting for a majority that no single party can currently prove it holds.
