Tamil Nadu Political Talks Underway as CPI, CPI(M), VCK Weigh Coalition Options
Outgoing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has initiated discussions with the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) to determine the path forward in a hung Assembly, where no party has secured a majority. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), with 112 seats including support from five Congress MLAs, falls short of the 118 needed to form a government, placing the three two-seat parties in a kingmaker role.
Stalin met with CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam, CPI State secretary M. Veerapandian, and VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan at his residence, where he proposed that the allies could support an AIADMK-led administration, according to party sources. The DMK will not join any government, Stalin reportedly told the leaders, leaving the decision on alignment to the three smaller parties.
The CPI and CPI(M) have deferred their decision, citing scheduled State committee meetings on Friday to deliberate the issue. Thol. Thirumavalavan indicated the VCK would align with the Communists' final stance. The outcome of these internal consultations will determine the next course of government formation in Tamil Nadu.
