TVK Threatens Mass Resignation Over Government Formation in Tamil Nadu
The TVK party, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has warned that all 108 of its MLAs will resign if the DMK and AIADMK attempt to stake a claim to form the government in Tamil Nadu, according to sources. The warning comes amid a stalemate over government formation, with the TVK suspecting that the DMK and AIADMK are working together to stop its bid.
The TVK has 108 seats, but is still short of the majority mark of 118 seats. However, the party has received support from the Congress, which has five seats, and is reportedly approaching other allies of the DMK for support.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar has asked Vijay to prove his numbers before staking a claim to form the government, after meeting with him twice in the past 24 hours.
The immediate outlook is that the TVK will continue to negotiate with other parties to achieve a majority, while the DMK and AIADMK will also be seeking to form alliances to stake a claim to government formation. The Governor's office will be closely watching the developments, and a decision on government formation is expected in the coming days.
