Left Front to Hold Kolkata Rally Over Alleged Post-Election Attacks on Workers

The Left Front will hold a protest rally in Kolkata on Friday (May 8, 2026) evening at the Esplanade area, denouncing alleged attacks on working people across West Bengal in the guise of victory celebrations after the BJP's sweep in the state Assembly elections. Front officials said the demonstration aims to highlight what they describe as targeted violence against laborers and working-class citizens in several districts since the results were declared.
The BJP won 207 of the 294 Assembly seats, securing a decisive majority, while the Trinamool Congress won 80. The Left Front, which failed to win any seat in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the 2021 Assembly elections, broke its losing streak as the CPI(M) captured the Domkal seat in Murshidabad. Its ally, the Indian Secular Front, retained Bhangar in South 24 Parganas.
The rally is scheduled for Friday evening and will involve members of all constituent parties of the Left Front. Organizers said they aim to draw attention to rising social tensions and calls for accountability over post-poll violence. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
