Rahul Gandhi led a march of 150 opposition MPs from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday, ending at the Janpath‑Kartavya Path crossing. The group carried banners and a memorandum demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The march followed a earlier gathering of nearly 150 INDIA bloc leaders in Parliament’s Central Hall.
The memorandum, signed by leaders of 16 opposition parties, cites “concerns about the functioning and impartiality” of the Election Commission. It calls for an immediate resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and requests a review of the commission’s appointment processes. The document is slated for formal submission to President Droupadi Murmu during the meeting.
In anticipation of demonstrations, Delhi Police ordered a 24‑hour suspension of mobile internet services within a 4‑km radius of the Janpath‑Kartavya Path crossing starting at 10 pm on Friday. The move aims to curb potential unrest as parties mobilize support for the memorandum.
Congress spokesperson Rahul Gandhi said the march underscored the opposition’s commitment to electoral integrity. Opposition leaders from the INDIA coalition expressed confidence that the President would heed the memorandum. The outcome of the submission remains uncertain as the President’s response will be announced later this week.
