Punalur police on Saturday arrested a 40-year-old man, identified as Sanish, for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl onboard the Palaruvi Express. The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday morning while the victim and her family were travelling in a general compartment.
According to authorities, Sanish is a repeat offender with a prior criminal record, including a history of attempted murder. The child was part of a family from Tamil Nadu who were returning home after completing a pilgrimage in Kerala.
The crime was brought to light by a vigilant woman seated nearby, who noticed the suspicious activity and recorded a video of the incident on her phone, immediately forwarding the evidence to the authorities.
The police intercepted the train and took the suspect into custody, thanks to the timely intervention of the co-passenger. The accused allegedly picked the girl up from where she was sleeping next to her grandfather and carried her to a different compartment to commit the assault.
The case is currently under investigation, and the court will likely hear the case in the coming days. The police have commended the co-passenger for her quick thinking and action, which helped in the swift arrest of the accused.
