The Congress party on Thursday criticized the Modi Government over women's safety, citing data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) that shows a 42.6% rise in crimes against women since 2013. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said that the government's narrative on women's safety is contradicted by official data, which also shows a 204.6% increase in crimes against children, a 41.3% increase in atrocities against Dalits, and a 46.7% increase in crimes against Adivasis.
According to the NCRB's 2024 report, cybercrime has surged by 1,689% and 10,546 farmers, 52,931 daily wage labourers, and 14,488 students died in 2024. The report also recorded an increase in cases involving juveniles in conflict with the law and crimes against senior citizens.
All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba accused the BJP of using 'Beti Bachao' and 'Nari Vandan' merely as political slogans while failing to ensure justice for women. She cited NCRB figures, which show that 42,85,888 cases of crimes against women were registered between 2014 and 2024 during the Modi Government's tenure.
The Congress party has demanded that NCRB data on crimes against women be discussed during the Monsoon Session of Parliament and has sought details on the number of victims who have received justice and convictions secured under the POCSO Act. The party's criticism of the Modi Government is likely to continue in the coming days, with the issue of women's safety expected to be a major point of contention.
